offensive

On "The View" yesterday, co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck (back?) explicitly compared the use of "Plan B" emergency contraception to leaving an infant on the street to die.

So offensive.

Good point made at the end, though, that figuring out real ways to talk about these things with those who disagree with us would be sooo helpful/refreshing/move us in a new direction.

She's also, like, OMIGOD, so inarticulate. Between Hasselbeck and Baba Wawa, reason enough for me to never actually watch this show.

I did the woman who is worried that she might forget she is menopausal and have a pregnancy scare. :)

What this dumb excuse for a human being, much less a woman, fails to mention is that plain old ordinary birth control pills prevent fertilized eggs from attaching to the uterine walls. The Pill works twofold, if memory serves: it makes the body think that it's pregnant, and it makes the uterus inhospitable to a fertilized egg, should fertilization occur.

This bint is so damned stupid, she apparently doesn't realize that. Like most people who would be so quick to deny women their reproductive freedoms, she is uneducated, yet has no qualms about broadcasting that lack of education to her equally uneducated counterparts. You can tell a lie a bunch of times and all of a sudden it seems true, you know?

I couldn't sit through more than a minute or two of that hysterical nonsense. What a ridiculous display. Rich White Woman braying on and on about how "life begins at conception" and how Plan B "murders baaaaaaybeeeeeeees," but no mention of the children currently being murdered in Sudan, Iraq, Israel, Hezbollah, Lebanon, and even here in the United States. No concern for them whatsoever.

It's the Republican way.

Thanks for posting it.

And one more thing (I forgot!): why on EARTH are these other three women APOLOGIZING to Hysteria Girl all of the time? What, so you're "sorry" for standing up for the reproductive choices of your sisters? What, you're "sorry" about the possibility of stepping on that ninny's pedicured toes? What on earth is there to be "sorry" about, other than the fact that a woman that damned stupid walks this planet and has a television program on which she can blather for millions of dollars each year?

I'm really confused as to why IUD's aren't a more popular form of birth control. I got one last year while in search of birth control that wouldn't be so harmful to an over-35 woman who smokes and I have to say, it's the perfect solution. One day of discomfort, 250.00 and it lasts for 12 years. No monthly visits, no remembering pills, no multiple purchases. It can be taken out at any time. It doesn't fuck up your hormones. I just don't get why more women don't choose this as a birth control solution.
And just so I stay somewhat on topic, I wholly support the morning after pill. Just because a baby comes to term doesn't mean it will have a life worth living.

Ummm . . . why should she mention it? It wasn't part of what they were discussing, was it? And how do you know she doesn't know it? God, if she HAD mentioned it, can you imagine how much more of an uproar there would have been, and how many more ugly things people would have had to say about her?

"no mention of the children currently being murdered in Sudan, Iraq, Israel, Hezbollah, Lebanon, and even here in the United States. No concern for them whatsoever."

Again, why would she mention that during a dicussion of the morning after pill? How do you presume to judge whether she cares about those children or not?

"It's the Republican way."

Talk about being offended! I don't have a clue about her political affiliation, and I don't care either, but the idea that if you are against the morning after pill you are a Republican is VERY offensive to me.

I support the Catholic position, that every life is sacred from the moment of conception until natural death. I'm upset about the morning after pill, and I'm very upset and concerned about Israel's actions in Lebanon. So don't be so quick to stereotype people, or you come off sounding like a stereotype yourself.

Re the IUD, I can't speak for everyone but it is believed that the IUD also works as an abortifacient, which would prevent a certain portion of the population from using it.

I also used to support "the Catholic position" on things. Then I realized that the "hugs and kisses" that I received at the hands of two priests for years while I was at Catholic school as a child was in fact my being molested by those men.

If you want to get outraged and unctuous, fine. However, with me, you're going to have to establish credibility in another way. Your being Catholic does not make you a better person or a particular authority in my eyes. It's not your fault. Blame two pedophiles who preyed on a little girl for years. It's the second time that you have mentioned it to me as a means of furthering your arguments. Honestly, it doesn't work. And I am not interested in arguing, anyway.

Enough of that.

FYI: Elisabeth Whatshername is a rabid Republican, even having given a speech during one of the coveted evening slots during the 2004 RNC.

If you are offended by the affiliation/stereotype/generalization, well, it's a sad fact that we are judged by the company we keep. Think how upset I get every time people think that I want Hilary Clinton in White House, simply because I am a Democrat.

Really, what is astonishing is that none of the women in that clip seems to know that this contreception prevents fertilization of the egg to begin with, just like the pill...their lack of understanding on the topic was pretty sad.

actually, plan b prevents ovulation not exactly fertilization...but still, closer than the view got it!

Laura,

I am very sorry to hear about what happened to you. I understand your anger but don't think that just because there are monsters within the Church (they are everywhere else, too) means that nothing taught by the Church has validity.

I don't see where I was either "outraged [or] unctuous." And I'm not really trying to "establish credibility," rather just explain where my own beliefs on this issue come from. I never said being Catholic made me better or an authority--it's just who I am and if I mention it in arguments it is by way of explaining where I am coming from.

um Laura...anger issues much? I personally know someone who was abused by clergy and forgave and moved on instead of letting it consume them. I also know someone who was abused by a doctor but they havent written off the medical profession.
