new article on how mothers influence children's diabetes risk

THIS BIG NAME SCIENTIST GUY says women need to eat well and not get fat during pregnancy, and they need to breastfeed as long as possible in order to minimize their babies' future risk for obesity and diabetes.

(I read this while guiltily eating a pop tart at my desk. Bad, bad me)

I gained 50 pounds with each of my pregnancies. No matter what I did or did not do, I gained 50 pounds in order to produce relatively small babies (6 lbs 8 oz, 6 lbs 15 ozs, 7 lbs 6 ozs).

This time, I am starting pregnancy 15 pounds over my best weight, so I really, really want to avoid gaining 50 lbs. I am not a big person, so me weighing 175 lbs is NOT a graceful picture. I have already gained 4 pounds.

I start my yoga class tonight...

Diabetes doesn't run in my family and on the whole, my family doesn't tend to have major weight problems. However, diabetes DOES run in Jon's family, so our baby will be at higher risk. Gotta lay off the pop tarts.

Good luck on not gaining as much. If you come up with a successful way to do it, let me know. I have gained 50-70 lbs. with every baby (I produce huge babies, but I think that's genetic myself). I want to do this one more time and it sure would be nice to be able to find maternity clothes that still fit by the end!

I used pregnancy as an excuse to eat what and when I wanted. I realize in hindsight that's what I did and why I gained a lot of weight that had nothing to do with being pregnant, except using it as a justification. I think a lot of women who really enjoy food do this. "Honey, I'm c-r-a-v-i-n-g a milk shake," or whatever. Honey doesn't know any better and runs to Dairy Queen. The Piper gets paid when the baby's born and mama is fat and can't wear any of her old clothes. And, mama doesn't look so great either. Post-baby fat is the hardest there is to shed for some reason. Or could it be, "But honey I just had a baby and I'm h-u-n-g-r-y?" If I could go back in time, I'd eat a healthy diet while pregnant, exercise and look and feel great post-birth.
