remember ricki lake?

Well, she has a new documenray coming out - she made it - ABOUT MIDWIVES.

I'll look forward to seeing it.

On another note, when I read about divorced people who get along well with the fathers of their children, I'm wistful.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm looking forward to seeing her documentary. Midwifery is an option I don't want to live without; I'm having my first home birth next month and am so excited.

On another note. First time at your blog and I like it!

I was interviewed at a birth conference for this documentary. Ricki has been active in the NYC birth community for years as an advocate for home birth and birthing normally. She has said her greatest dream would to become a midwife.

hope you dont die during your homebirth. as I read this blurb in people magazine I actually happened to be watching a trial on tv about some self styled midwives whose client croaked because she had a medical emergency and they didnt get her to real health care in time. fortunately they are now warming a jail cell. the family members unanimously said they wanted these women locked up so that others will not be so careless and so more women might die. do yourself a favor lady: dont buy the hype and have your baby in a hospital.

I had both my children at home and I have to say that I am thrilled to see people like ricki spreading the truth! The last comment was probably made by an obstetrician who is afraid of their pocket book dwindling. We as a nation have one of the worst records for infant mortality and prematurity, hospitals have to be doing something wrong! I chalk it up to scheduled c-sections and misconceptions regarding the birthing process in general. Thank god for midwives!

nope I am not an OB. closest I can come to that is a stint at a vet clinic. but I am educated about health matters and this whole home birth thing appalls me. but its to be expected that anyone who comes out against anything alternative must of course be in cahoots with the AMA or something in the minds of supporters of such things.

Wow, anonymous... you are basing your opinion on homebirth on one anecdotal tale instead of the mounds and mounds of scientific research which show homebirth to be equal to or SAFER THAN hospital birth? I mean.. I'm not against people believing in fairy tales and myths, but just amused that you're not reading the research on homebirth, as you claim to be "educated on health matters". Why the curious blind spot?

I am super excited to see this documentary on midwives. I am an OB nurse and have been very interested in homebirthing since my second hospital birth. I can honestly say that so many people...men and women...are fed the WRONG information about birth. It is a natural process and does not require a hospital unless it is a high risk pregnancy or unless something goes wrong during the labor or delivery. Any skilled midwife would be able to recognize a potential problem and quickly transfer the patient's care over to a local hospital. Homebirth is safe. I would birth close to a hospital just in case but it has been PROVEN to be very safe. I see hospital births everyday and they are not always better...I can assure you.
