beachy keen

Usually our family goes to Edisto Island for our annual August beach excursion. One year we went to Pawley's. But this year we waited too late to reserve our house at either place, so we are going to try Tybee Island, near Savannah. We just booked our place, only because we waited so late, for the first time we are doing a condo on the beach instead of a house. Not our first choice, but I'm sure it will be fine.

Anybody ever done a beach week at Tybee? What did you think?

I haven't done a week, but one day here and there. I know someone who did a week and was bored...not much to do on Tybee. You may have to drive to Savannah to buy groceries, eat out, entertainment etc. If you want quiet and not commercialism I think you will be happy. There is a little bar beside the lighthouse that make great frozen drinks!

Tybee's quiet, but that can be wonderful. Savannah is very cool too, although certainly not temperature-wise in August!

we've vacationed for many years on sapelo island, about an hour south of savanah. it's nothing but quiet -- literally there's nothing there but miles and miles of beaches. it's beautiful. we always go in april, though, because i'd worry about how hit it must be in august...

savanah is one of my all-time favorite cities. i could easily spend a week there, just walking around.

We were there about 5 years ago. As Suzette said, no chain restaurants, no supermarkets, no big box stores, no "amusements". Whether that is good or bad depends on your perspective. Your 14 yo may get bored.
Savannah is a pretty good haul from there as well.

Actually, there is a great place on Tybee called the Breakfast Club- it's just a greasy spoon breakfast place, but it's really cool.

My best friend in Louisville, KY, has a great deal in common with you and, along with her kids, adored Tybee.

Watch out for the several megaton nuclear weapon that was accidentally dropped into the ocean off of Tybee back in the 50's. The Air Force says it's "perfectly safe" lying there on the bottom of the ocean.

I grew up in Statesboro (you'll pass it on I-16) and went to Georgia Southern and spent a lot of time at Tybee.

I haven't been there in a few years but I hear it is gentrifying...used to be lots of rednecks, bikers and military but I think now it is trendily shabby.

There are a couple of good seafood restaurants there, and if you want to go into Savannah one night, it's not a bad drive.

I'm trying to figure out what you mean. Do you bemoan the loss of the rednecks, bikers and military? And does trendily shabby mean that now the locals can't afford to go there anymore?
I hope not, but it sounds like you are bashing the locals who used to go there and loving the fact that they've been priced out so that visitors from elsewhere can enjoy it at higher prices.

This is one of the things I don't like about our country. People don't go do the stuff that's close to them and tolerate the mixed crowd. They want it all cleaned up so they can flit from Hilton Head to the fireflies in the Smokies without being bothered by the pesky local people they look down on.

Anon, you are ASSuming an awful lot.

I am stating FACTS. How do you know from my comment that I am "bashing the locals who used to go there and loving the fact that they've been priced out so that visitors from elsewhere can enjoy it at higher prices." From there you go on to complain "people don't go do the stuff that's close to them and tolerate the mixed crowd. They want it all cleaned up so they can flit from Hilton Head to the fireflies in the Smokies without being bothered by the pesky local people they look down on". Are you including ME in those "people"? You have no idea who I am, what I like or don't like, and for all you know I might be one of those rednecks, bikers or military.

Tybee IS becoming trendily shabby and getting more expensive, as people go there and think they've discovered the next new place. It's a fact. There is absolutely no judgment in that statement - at least not on my end.

And for the record, I DESPISE Hilton Head. I went there a lot, too, and I'll choose Tybee Island any day.

I'm assuming nothing about you. Please note that I ASKED are you bemoaning the loss of the rednecks, etc.

And I said I HOPE NOT, but it sounds as though...

All you had to do was clarify your comments. I'm still not sure what you meant in your original post.

And I said people in this country do x. Note that I STARTED A NEW PARAGRAPH and never said YOU did any of this stuff.

Either you are not a careful reader, or 'the lady doth protest too much.' OR YOU are assuming a lot of things about my post.
