Questions:

-Is it unreasonable of me to want someone doing major roof repairs to break his bid out into labor and materials?

-Is it normal operating procedure for roofer to want me to pay him for materials -or at least some of them - on the front end?

No it's not, to both questions. I'm an interior designer in Los Angeles and we deal with contractors all the time. The vast majority of contractors will do anything to avoid additional paperwork, thus resisting providing you with a materials invoice seperate from labor. Asking for money to cover materials is normal - we do it all the time. I'm an attachment parent of one and one-in-the-oven. Found your blog while doing one of my many middle-of-the-night stints trying to deal with sleep issues. Thank you for your writings on the subject of AP and helping me feel more normal in this town of power moms who have lost all confidence in the natural order of things.

My husband is a contractor, just starting out on his own, and he ask for half up front to cover some materials and labor. Unless it's a really big expensive job the other half comes when he finishes the job. If the contractor is from a big company they should have the money to cover materials. He doesn't break it down generally although he will explain it in person if they want to know. That helps people to understand why certain features are more expensive than others.

No.

Yes.

Usually my contractors don't break it out, but I don't ask. And I generally pay at 50% completion and 100%, but that's for commercial and dealing with a lot of money. Usually we have to do a bank draw. So for residential, I'm not surprised that he wants something up front.
