What do you think of the name Walter for a BoyBaby? It's sort of growing on me.

Sorry to be so blunt but I think it's a horrible ugly name.
Do not do that to your kid unless you must name it after grandparents or some other relative out of respect

I like Wallace better then Walter.
Then you can call him "Ace"
Now that is cool!

I agree, nt attrative for some reason. I have been keeping an eye on the name thing and you have much better ones. I am in the same boat but will hopefully know next week if its a boy or girl after my amnio.

hope they don't get "walter The farting Dog" book as a gift or something. although book is cute as all get out!

I think it's an ugly name, but I have known two very interesting people named Walter, so my feelings about it are mixed.

Everytime I hear that name I think of Radar on M.A.S.H.

Uhhh....no.

All the Walters I know are drunks from either 1) booze or 2) prescription drugs. I do like Wallace. We had picked Holden for a boy when I was preggers, but only had daughters. You could use that!

I don't think it's bad at all. I graduated with a Walter that went by Wally and he was one of the most popular people in our class. No stigma there.

You're also pretty much guaranteed that there won't be 4 Walters on his soccer team.

I think of that scene from Sleepless in Seattle when Meg Ryan is going on and about Sam in Seattle and Rosie O'Donnell says very sarcastically "What about Walter?"

Walter? I wouldn't.

I like it. I know only cool Walters.

Only if you want the poor kid to be beaten up every day at school.

I think that names are really magical incantations---whatever you call your boy, be sure YOU love it and it will resonate with love.

I love the name Ray for a baby and hardly anyone I know likes it, but Ray makes me happy!

What? Who are these grumps? It's lovely. (personally I think of Garp's little boy. Who I loved.) I love the name Walter.

Kate,
First I would ask why the name is meaningful to you. Is it a family name? Would you be naming him after someone like?
• Walter of Compiègne, 12th century French poet/monk
• Walter Cronkite, renowned CBS anchorman
• Walter Elias Disney, creator of Walt Disney Company
• Walter Matthew Jefferies, aviation and mechanical artist, set designer and writer
• Walter Johnson, legendary baseball star pitcher of the 1910s and 1920s
• Walter Koenig, actor best known as "Mr. Chekov" on Star Trek
• Walter Mondale, former Vice President of the United States
• Sir Walter Raleigh, English explorer
• Walter Mosca, the fictional hero in Mario Puzo's The Dark Arena
Or my fave:
Walter Whitman AKA Walt Whitman

FYI Walter means ruler of the Army…

That all being said, my second thought was “well since you asked, hunny “hell no…” but now that I see… there are some cool Walter’s out there!
Sooo maybe……

Uumomma

Ps:
My boys both have “different” names, well sort off
Mathias Winfield
Colin Alexander
Btw, my mother who is, well some would say “a bit touched” Hated Mathias Winfield even thought Winfield was her Brothers name!.. but now she sees the light, Mathias is so , well Mathias!

The only Walter I know is borderline homeless and everytime he speaks, his teeth come loose and he spits on me. The only coffee cup he owns is held together by duct tape. We call him The Clacker.

Walter's OK, but not Eugene??? There weren't 5 popes named Walter, you know.

That should be S. Eugene K.

How about A. Wilford Brimley?

I've known two men named Walter, and both absolutely hated having that name. I'm envisioning the poor child being taunted with "Wal-Mart" and "Walter the Farting Dog" after school. There's a reason why some names aren't used a lot.

To me, Walter sounds like an honorable, upstanding man. And there's a little boy in my son's kindergarten class named Walter, so it's not unheard of.

I LOVE Walter. I wanted Jack to be a Walter, and I was going to call him Walt. I still think he looks like a Walt - a straight A student, athletic type. Love it, love it, love it.

Sorry, I think it's really ugly.
I like Ray (or Raymond) though, as suggested by a poster above.

I've named three boys, and my best advice is to walk around the house and repeat the name you're considering about a hundred times, because you are going to say it a LOT more than you realize! Practice yelling it on the soccer sidelines (or chess club sidelines!) and practice it in a scolding tone. Prepare for negative reactions, even from grandparents. I like names that won't be on the class roll five other times but that aren't so offbeat they're going to cause a problem every time you introduce the kid. The best baby name book I read was called Beyond Jennifer and Jason, Madison and Montana, because it provides similar alternatives to names and groups them according to the "first impression" they give. I chose heavily from the "grandpa list," which I'm guessing is where you'd find Walter.

Re: Grandpa list

While we may associate the name Walter with grandparents, these kids' grandparents are going to be named Susan and William and Thomas and Sharon and Robert and such. So Walter won't have near the same meaning to them that it does to us today.

If you name after the living grandparents you could not have had better names to honor.

William Thomas Robert Hickman

That is a beautiful strong male name.

Growing up in the '70s, I had lots of friends with names like Scott and Brian, which almost no one uses nowadays. Most of our friends are naming their boys names like Austin,Cameron,Dylan, and I admit I'm not ready for Grandma Caitlyn and Grandpa Kyle. ;) I like the resurgence of so-called grandpa names like Henry and Charlie. Will someone bring back Bessie?

Anonymous said...

I agree - and Bessie is a good one. Some need to stay away (my grandma's name is Florence. Oy.), but a lot of them are neat now.

Oooh, I'd have to give the thumbs down to Walter. It's one of those names I can't imagine a child having now....kind of like Milton (my grandfather's name). Or Gary. Or Wayne.

And I thought of "Walter the Farting Dog" right away too!

UH NOOOO!!! i will not have a brother named walter, sorry if that offends someone :)
