one of many reasons i will never be a southern baptist

Prominent SB theologian Albert Mohler writes on his blog that he now accepts that there is strong evidence that homosexuality is indeed a biological human trait, like skin color or congenital blindness.

He says that if this is determined to be true, and genetic testing can reveal which babies are gay in the womb, the Christian response should be to avoid aborting these pre-sinners, but instead to utilize the medical treatments he belives will one day be available to CHANGE sexual orientation in fetuses. If no treatment is available, and a baby is "born gay," Mohler says that's no reason to accept that person's inborn sexual orientation. Instead, Christians should work hard to help that gay person in his/her strggles with this lifelong, inborn sinfulness.

This makes me ill.

Stuff like this is one of the many reasons I'm an ex–Southern Baptist. In fact, I can't stand to step foot in any SB church when I visit my childhood hometown in Texas. It makes me feel like I'm drowning. The head games the SB churches play with churchgoers can mess people up for life.

Me, too.

My favorite crazy fundie philosophy of late is the "soy makes you gay" argument. I actually have heard it from two different people at work who heard it from their preachers at church! My bet is that Albert Mohler is way in the closet himself. And isn't christianity supposed to be about the NEW testament anyway?

All Southern Baptist's don't share the same philosophy. I know I don't. The SBC doesn't have good spokespeople in Mohler and Richard Land. They need a new PR person badly.

the soy argument isn't as far fetched as you think. I googled it and while I hadn't heard this particular twist, I have heard from nonreligious sources that soy in excess plays havoc with the hormones of growing children. I have long thought an acquintances girls started their periods very very young because she fed them soy milk like water all their childhood. I have also heard of an increase in a rare penile defect in baby boys and when they question the mothers about their habits during pregnancy the common denominator seems to be overconsumption of soy.

the soy debacle in part is why I am very very cautious about health foodies crazes. What is the wonder food today turns out to have really bad side effects tomorrow. Particularly in excess. I like tofu just fine but I am not about to eat it all the time. Far better off with a nice chicken breast

I watched Jesus Camp this past week.

It should be mandatory viewing for every sane American.

Furthermore, while I loved An Inconvenient Truth, and I want Al to make a WH run on '08 so bad I could cry, Jesus Camp deserved the Oscar.

And you are assuming that was is seen in Jesus Camp is representative? EVERY religion has its lunatic fringe. However it seems like Christians are the only group that is fair game. I know of Orthodox Jewish sects that would curl your toes. New Age weirdies that think they are going to be kidnapped by spaceships. And lets not EVEN talk about Muslim extremism. Just because these people are flake-os doesn't mean all who take Jesus and the bible seriously are the same. I find it interesting that they did not go to some fairly intelligent conservative christian college and tape people having intelligent discussions about spiritual matters..nope...that wouldn't serve their purposes now would it? Imagine the shocking expose they could do on Rick Warren or Celebrate Recovery and all the good they have done. No, let's go for some out there pentacostals who are absolute flakes.
