children don't walk

It's true: kids today aren't allowed to WALK OR BIKE ANYWHERE because parents are afraid they will be snatched.

I'm so glad to see the things I am always saying about the exaggerated risks of stranger danger in print! You know where we live, and my kids are allowed to walk to the library, to the store, to the playground. I like them to go in pairs, or with the dog, but I don't keep them in. The exercise is good, and the independence is good, and not having to drive them everywhere is also good. :-)

yeah and if YOUR kid is the one snatched all these odds are meaningless. It is a shame that in todays world one has to be this careful but I would rather be safe than sorry. I am careful myself, not walking at night, not going places alone and I tell my kids this too.
The odds of something happening are yes, small, but soooo horrific that I cannot understand any caring parent considering the independence and getting out of driving them to be worth it. You can minimize all you want but it happens. I always thought it great as a kid how everyone floated around to each others houses and the parents didn't really care as long as you were home by a certain time. Until I became an adult and heard how many kids were being molested etc while they were out roaming the neighborhood. Sorry, I'm not with you on this one.

rather interesting that because of something that "might" happen you will neglect your kids for your career but because of someting that "might" happen with horrific results you ignore the risk blithely.
