Hey Katie,
I stumbled across your blog in a google for a breastfeeding issue. Good to see you here on the web - we met at the '98 Chicago gathering.

Blue Skies,

I wanted so badly to have a homebirth with my third baby(first birth had complications, so the second birth gave me the confidence to want to go for it)! But I was on medicaid and those insurance companies don't allow homebirth. I tried to call and see if they'd give me permission but they said they wouldn't pay for anything at all if I did a homebirth and I didn't have the 3000 upfront(no payment plans) I would need to pay for it myself. And I live extremely close to two hospitals and only 2 blocks from the midwife!

Homebirth isn't right for everybody, but we should have the right to give birth at home

I agree. It's sad to see so many midwives folding up and the OBs that backed them up being unable to practice. I know the OB who was my midwife's backup can no longer practice at area hospitals. It's a tragic loss for the choice of women everywhere. I was so glad to be able to birth at home, in comfort and quiet, undisturbed. I've doula'd at home, hospital, and birthing centers, and I'd choose home anyday!

Jamie, I had to get away from the discussion at neonatal doc also, but I had talked about losing my son in a hospital transfer & felt Dr. Amy was using it against me. If you go back you will see some excellent new comments. I still feel that for low risk mamas, home birth is best for babies.

Doctors will always try to stop it b/c of obvious $$ reasons, but women should always feel free to give birth where they feel comfortable. When things do go wrong, especially things that would have the same outcome in a hospital, it is horrible the way docctors (neonatalogists) treat homebirthing families.

There was a case where I live recently of a homebirth where family was prosecuted and found guilty, facing jail time for practicing medicine without a license, helping with a homebirth for a family member (they were not midwives but the jury found them to be acting in such a role)
