My boss got a complaint this week that I am a "known Democratic actovist" and thus should not be producing the weekly public affairs program I produce.
More later on this, but I cannot begin to tell you how irritating I find this. My boss was wonderful and reasonable and thoughtful, as he always is (I've talked about how great my job is before), but I feel the need to defend myself in public, but I cannot. But this guy's assertion is completely without merit on every level.

you aren't a democrat? you aren't known? you aren't an activist? or none of that should matter to how/whether you do your journalistic job?
Before I started this job, I was involved in politics. Now I cannot be in any organized way. That's part of my job and I accept that.
I am not a "known Democratic activist," no. And a few of my views are utterly out of sync with the Dems anyway...
Does he feel that your liberal democrat views are prevalant during your produced piece; or does he feel that a person who is well known for being a democrat cannot be unbiased? Was there just one complaint? Or several? Has this incident actually affected your position? I think we need more details! By the way; I am at church during the political broadcast (I think the one to which you are referring) and I never actually see you on T.V. so how would I as a "viewer" know who is behind the production?Whomever made this complaint must have inside information.
It was one complaint. I don't appear on this program, I simply produce it. This means I choose the show topics and the guests. I do not write any scripts or tell anyone what they can or cannot say.
If some idiots in this country have their way, we'll all be having to take some sort of conservative political litmus test in order to get a job. Good lord, isn't there enough conservative programming (Sunday morning church shows, Faux News) to make them happy?

So, if you produce and choose the topic and the guests are not robots, how could there be a legitimate complaint? I am a pretty conservative christian, but my job requires that I keep that info personal. What makes this country great is that I can have my opionion and you can have yours. We can and do sometimes disagree. As I asked earlier...could this person who complained have an inside view? Could it be someone at your station who is longing for your producing hat on that show? Also, if there is only one complaint I have to wonder why the station took it so seriously. Have they considered the "source"?
Was this complaintant a male or female? And was the complaint made in reference to anything in particular or just a blanket complaint?
