I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

You know, gardening is 'work" if you don't have time and are not called to it. The pictures that you see in magazines are a 'moment in time." If not tended regularly, a garden will be a mess of weeds in no time. You might want to reconsider the simple look and a few hanging baskets that you have in the first picture. If you forget to water the hanging baskets you can easily go back to K-Mart for a redo...
Can't wait to see the after pics - I love your house!
One word, anon: kids.
But the three inches of mulch that's going down will make light work of the weeding, anyway, so they'll still have plenty of time to slop the pigs. As long as you do a good mulching once a year, the weeding won't be any big whoop.

I bet you're finding some cool stuff diggin around in there. The bungalow we had in Fountain City had tons of old bottles in the back yard. I still have them. -Ann
The best thing so far is a big chunk of petrified wood.
