Well, Ben and Jen have had
their baby. Congrats to them. I'm a bit bummed because now
that they have named their baby "Violet," it's going to become a trendy
name and if I ever have another baby girl, I wanted to name her Violet.
Oh well.

violet has been on my short-list for about 15 years -- and has now, as you would expect, been dropped the hell off. oh, well, it's not like i am going to have anymore babies, anyway. but it does make me sad that everything truly interesting or eccentric is being co-opted by middle america -- i feel no longer able to spot my "tribe" on the street anymore...what with all the burgundy hair, betty page bangs, and little black geek chic glasses every other bastard seems to be sporting these days.
it's all such a pity. there is no place left to run, i'm afraid -- except straight into soccer-momdom. hey, perhaps even THAT will be a hip retro pose someday!
=:-)

my 80 year old mother in law is named Violet. She goes by Vi. Her mother was named Viola. I think it's a powerful name and people don't often forget it. I don't think it will be a trend.
I didn't think a tribe was something you could spot on the street. You have to get to KNOW people before you find out whether or not they are going to be your friend or are part of your 'tribe'...and you can be very surprised at how 'cool' and interesting some 'unhip' looking people can be. Some of the most boring people I've ever known were 'hip' poseurs.
Never understood the imperative to be 'cool' and 'different' when all the cool and different people look just alike...look how cool I am with my congee tattoo over the crack of my ass...just like all the other 21 year old girls.
Why is it bad when lots of people get into a good thing? "I'm cool because me and my friends are the only ones who know x is cool" is such an UNCOOL, teenage type attitude. quite laughable, actually...
I am with anonymous. I dislike the attitude of people like Muffy that they have to be oh so arty and oh so different and god forbid something that they claimed as their little anti establishment territory catches on as a trend.
I remember when I got my first tattoo a friend of a friend got all bent to this mutual friend that if I and my husband were now getting tattoos then she was going to have all hers removed. I mentioned this to the artist who did my first tattoo and his response was that she got hers for the wrong reasons. if the only reason someone is doing something is so they can be "different" from the people that they percieve as the enemy (soccer moms? the enemy? what is she doing reading this blog..I think the bloggers kids play soccer...)then they are seriously immature. grow up Muffy.
