invisible fence?

Jon and I are thinking of installing an invisible electric fence for our three dogs at our new house. We will also have a real fence in part of the backyard because of the creek, but I would like the dogs to be able to be all over the front and back yard.

I had one of these years ago at my old house, but it was installed wrong and never really worked right. I am wondering what experiences other people have had - good and bad - with these invisible fence systems and their dogs.

I would worry about people crossing the fence to bother the dogs. Your future neighborhood borders on a, let's say, redneck area, as I recall. I would take measures to protect my pets from would-be dognappers.

I would suggest not investing in the fence and encouraging the kids to walk the dogs regularly in your new neighborhood.

Ross's masseuse's sister has one, and he was just telling Ross yesterday what a pain in the derriere it has been for her. I think the main problem is that they require the dog owner to do a lot of training in order to get the dog to understand where the perimeter lies. Ross's masseuse said that with three children running around like sticky little ferrets (not that your three are either sticky or ferret-y, Katie dear) and the housewifey chores that go along with, his sister never had time to really train the dog, and it was a big waste of time and money.

FYI, we just got back from a visit to Ross's parents in Wichita. Nightmare! Nightmare! Will I ever quit dreaming of veneered faux colonial furniture coming to life and gnashing its teeth at me and chasing me down a paneled hallway?!

We bought PetSafe Wireless Pet Containment System for our beagle and it works wonders! It's wireless so we didn't need to (want to) invest in an installed fence. And when the buried wire fence breaks (groundhogs chew...) you have to dig it up to find out where the break is. When we go to visit friends for the day, we take the transmitter with us and make sure we bring Truman's collar. We plug in the transmitter when we get to our friends' and whenever he hears the beep-beep-beep he knows that's his limit. In fact, we bought two transmitters to give him more room in our yard. You can buy extra collars. Good luck! - Wendy

We tried the wireless one and wound up selling it. The whole shock collar thing terrified our dog, and the range was pathetic. The maximum range is supposedly 90 feet, which isn't much to begin with, but in real world use it's even less because trees, parked cars, terrain, etc. block the signal.

We have had our invisible fence (Invisible Fence brand)for 3 years and love it.

2 Caveats

1) training...training...especially the professional training. 3-4 times a day for 3-4 weeks. You have to be able to commit.

2) Crank up the shock. Your dog will have to be *hurt* by the shock.

The collar is great fun at parties where are great amounts of alcohol and stupid people!
