jazz

Why do you think it is that some people are so into jazz and others are very anti? It seems like a real bright line kind of thing.

I used to work at a club where I heard a lot of what sounded like terrible, cheesy lounge music to me, but I was told it was really good jazz that I should enjoy and appreciate as high art.

I think it turned me off jazz altogether.

Jazz is for people who are frightened by real rock and roll. It's a refuge for musical wusses.

You're full of shit, anon! I love to listen to Coltrane as much as like to listen to the Stooges. It's too bad you limit yourself like that.

I always feel like I should like jazz, but I just don't. It makes me feel very uncool that I do not.

Here's a few jazz records that are easy for beginners to digest; if you don't like any of these, then you'll probably never like jazz. Which is fine. Just don't say it's for wusses.

# Dave Brubeck - Time Out

# Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

# John Coltrane - Giant Steps

# John Coltrane - A Love Supreme

# Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

# Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um

# Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream

That's a good starter list. I used to not "get" jazz either. Then I started listening to a room mate's CDs and discovered I actually liked it. Brubeck is my favorite.

Katie you are hanging around with the wrong men. Find yourself someone who will take you to see some good jazz if they have a place to do that in Knoxville.

Yeah, blame her dislike for jazz on the men she hangs with. Nothing like a good man to change a woman's taste in music, right?

Well, I have had some boyfriends over the years change and expand on my taste in music. I consider it a good thing if a friend or boyfriend introduces me to stuff I then end up loving. Happened last year with the New Pornographers, which is my fave current pop band.

I think I am developing an appreciation for some jazz.
