ice cream guy

You know how some people have an inexplicable fear of clowns? Well, I have just discovered that I have some sort of visceral aversion to those ice cream vans that play tinny carnival music and tool around neighborhoods.

I grew up in a rural village, so the only place I ever saw these ice cream vans was on TV. And in my old neighborhood in Bearden, we must not have been on a route. But in our new neighborhood near downtown, we are visited daily by these ice cream guys.

I start feeling freaked out as soon as I hear the music ever so faintly, off in the distance. If my children are playing outside, I find myself going out to the yard and ushering them into the house as I hear the guy getting closer.

Of course they think I am totally weird...

I can't figure out where this aversion is coming from. Maybe I had a really bad past life experience with an ice cream van guy.

Oh, the ice cream guy brings back sweet memories of my childhood as we'd hear his truck coming in the distance and run in the house begging my parents for some money to buy ice cream... I wish there was one in our neighborhood so I could share this with my daughter when she gets older!

I've always told my kids (ages 4.5 and 3 now) that is the "music truck". And how nice it is that he drives around the neighborhood so we can all hear the nice music. Because I'm with you - they creep me out. Around us, they're always beat up vans with treats being sold out of the side door.

I briefly drove an ice cream truck one summer. Instead of the ice cream truck jingle, I put in an 8-track of Suzy Q by Credence. Kids thought I was weird. I guess they were right.

(I had to give up the job after taking too many buttons and pennies and food stamps for ice cream. I was losing money every day.)
